West Virginia is a state in the Southern Region of the United States and is often called the “Mountain State”. It is the only state in the U.S. to lie completely within a mountain range. Originally part of the state of Virginia, the residents of the counties that became West Virginia split from the rest of the state in part due to a disagreement over the issues of slavery and secession. The state is noted for its mountains and diverse topography, its historically significant logging and coal mining industries, and its political and labor history. It is one of the most densely karstic areas in the world, making it a choice area for recreational caving and scientific research. It is also known for a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities, including skiing, whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking and hunting. Spa destination resorts are not yet very popular, however local lodges and small hotels will usually offer a decent spa treatments programme.
