Michigan is a state located in the Great Lakes region of the Midwestern United States. The capital of the state is Lansing, and the largest city is Detroit. Michigan has the longest freshwater coastline of any political subdivision in the world, being bounded by four of the five Great Lakes plus Lake Saint Clair. Michigan is one of the leading U.S. states for recreational boating with 64,980 inland lakes and ponds. The state consists of two peninsulas that are separated by the Straits of Mackinac and features a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Tourism is very important in Michigan, supporting more than 193,000 jobs. Destinations draw vacationers, hunters, and nature enthusiasts from across the United States and Canada. Michigan is fifty percent forest land, much of it quite remote.
